A couple of weeks ago, I got to fulfil a lifelong ambition, meeting one of the most inspirational figures in the world of international sport, Pelé. Just the mention of this legend’s name conjures up images of the golden age of football where his Brazil squad dominated the field. Our encounter was not mere coincidence, Beverley Hills Auctioneers Juliens had come to London’s Mall Galleries to stage the most prestigious sports auction in history. The sale of the star’s memorabilia, ‘Pelé: The Collection’.
We had the privilege of catering for a World Cup winner, at one of the pre-auction previews. It proved the perfect opportunity to deliver an occasion with all the style, flair and panache befitting of Pelé himself! We kitted our barmen out in replicas of Pelé’s No.10 football shirts and constructed a bar within a goal, where guests could order expertly crafted Caipirinhas. Of course, we also injected a Brazilian flavour into the menu, playing to the trendy, über-chic South American Sushi craze sweeping the capital. Highlights included: Native lobster cone, spiced avocado and kimchi mayo, and Seared tuna, wasabi spiked edamame purée, pickled ginger and a sesame snap.
Pelé himself was on sparkling form, working the floor and sharing anecdotes from his glittering career with guests. It was a bravura performance from one of sport’s greatest stars, and we felt privileged to have been a part of it!
